Dev Diwali In Varanasi 2025

Dev Diwali or Dev Deepawali is a Hindu festival observed in the Hindu month of ‘Kartik’, celebrated with great pomp and show in the Indian city of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh. Dev Diwali is the ‘Festival of Lights of the Gods’ and falls on the Kartik Purnima (full moon day), fifteen days after the celebrations of Diwali. It corresponds to the month of November-December in the Gregorian calendar.

This religious ceremony is started by chanting of the holy Vedic mantras by the priests, lighting diyas at the ghats and the sparkling of fire crackers, to welcome and please the Gods and Goddesses.

Dev Diwali 2025 is on November 5th

On the occasion of Dev Diwali, all the ghats of River Ganga is lighted with thousands of diyas and crowded with pilgrims. This utsav is celebrated every year in the holy city of Varanasi. The festivities can also be witnessed in Gujarat and other northern states of India. In the Indian state of Maharashtra, Dev Diwali is observed on the first day of the month of ‘Margashirsh’. Dev Diwali is commemorated to honour the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon named ‘Tripurasur’. For this reason, this festival is also known as ‘Tripurotsav’. The festival of Dev Diwali coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain light festival.

Rituals of Dev Diwali:

The main ritual of Dev Diwali is the lighting of diyas after seeing the moon. The steps of every ghats of River Ganga, right from southernmost Ravidas Ghat to Rajghat, are illuminated with millions of diyas lit in honour of Goddess Ganga and other presiding devas.

The devotees get up early on the day of Dev Diwali and perform the ‘Kartik snan’, that is a ritual of taking a dip in the holy Ganges). They perform ‘deepdan’ (offering oil lamps) in the honour of Goddess Ganga. Following this ‘Ganga aarti’ is performed by 24 Brahmin Priests along with 24 girls, with full devotion.

On this occasion of Dev Diwali, people decorate their houses with oil lamps. Colourful designs or rangoli are made on the front doors. In several houses in Varanasi, ‘Akhand Ramayana’ is organized along with offering bhogs.

In the evening, on the streets of Varanasi, huge processions of beautifully decorated deities are taken out with full enthusiasm. The night sky is lit up with the lights of the firecrackers. After the event, dance performances and cultural programmes by famous personalities of Varanasi also takes place.

The Historical Background of Maha Kumbh Mela

The Maha Kumbh Mela is steeped in mythological and historical significance. As per Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela originated from the divine ‘Samudra Manthan’ or churning of the ocean, where the gods and demons fought for a pot (Kumbh) of the nectar of immortality (Amrit). As Lord Vishnu flew away with the pot, a few drops of the nectar fell in four places on earth, which are now known as Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain, and Nashik – the sites of the Kumbh Mela.

Each location’s mela is based on the position of Jupiter (Brihaspati) and the sun, and the zodiac sign in which Jupiter resides at the time. The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years in Prayagraj, is the largest and considered the most auspicious one.

Significance of Prayagraj in Maha Kumbh Mela

Prayagraj, previously known as Allahabad, holds a special place in Hinduism. Its significance stems from its geographical and spiritual attributes. The city is situated at the confluence (TriveniSangam) of three sacred rivers – the Ganges, Yamuna, and the invisible or mythical Saraswati. This confluence is believed to be a portal to heaven and hence considered extremely auspicious.

The Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj attracts millions of devotees from across the globe who come to bathe in the holy waters during the auspicious bathing dates. They believe that a dip in the sacred waters during the Kumbh Mela absolves them of their sins and helps them attain salvation. The Shahi Snan or Royal Bathing day is the most significant event of the Maha Kumbh Mela.

The Meaning of Shahi Snan

In the context of the Maha Kumbh Mela, “Shahi Snan” refers to the “royal bath. It signifies the ritualistic bathing ofthe holy men and the devotees in the sacred waters of the river. The Shahi Snan holds immense significance as it is believed to cleanse one’s soul of all past sins and pave the way towards Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

It is called a ‘royal’ bath because, on this day, the procession of the holy men belonging to various Akharas (religious orders) to the bathing ghats is no less than a royal parade. It’s a spectacle filled with grandeur and fervor, with the air resounding with chants and the sight of resplendent palanquins, flower-decked chariots, and musical bands.

Understanding the Ritual of Shahi Snan

The Shahi Snan ritual begins with the Naga Sadhus of the various Akharas taking the holy dip in the sacred river. These Sadhus, or holy men, are ascetics who have renounced all worldly possessions and live in the Himalayas. The Shahi Snan is marked by these Naga Sadhus’ grand processions, their bodies smeared in ashes, wearing only Rudraksha beads, and carrying Trishuls (tridents).

Each Akhara is allocated a specific time for bathing, the order of which is decided by their standing and reputation. The procession to the bathing site is an extravagant affair with the Sadhus seated on elephants, horses, and chariots, while devotional songs, hymns, and conch shell sounds create a divine atmosphere.

DEPARTURE FROM LUCKNOW
Leave Lucknow by 7 am by car, so that you are in Ayodhya by 9.30 or 10 am, to see everything you want to see. Ideally, pack a light breakfast for the route, so that you save time. The best way to travel to Ayodhya from Lucknow is by a private car or taxi on hire. Alternatively, you could check out the UPSRTC’s schedule for buses running between the two cities.
Here’s everything you must see and do while in Ayodhya:

10.30 AM: HANUMAN GARHI MANDIR
It is believed that a child is the strongest and the most confident when he sits in his mother’s lap. The Hanuman Garhi temple can boast of such strength. It is considered to be the most powerful seat of Lord Hanuman as he sits and enjoys in his mother Anjani’s lap here. Legend has it that Lord Hanuman lived here in a cave and guarded the Janambhoomi or Ramkot. Devotees believe that all their wishes are granted with a visit to this holy shrine.

11.30 AM: KANAK BHAWAN
Just a few minutes walk away is Kanak Bhawan. Legend goes that Ram was coming home with his bride, Janaki, the beautiful daughter of Raja Janak. Kaikeyi was in a dilemma – what would be a good ‘mukh dikhai’ for the first daughter-in-law of Raja Dashrath? She didn’t want anyone to feel she was any less a mother to Ram than Maa Kaushalya, so, a palace for the newlyweds would be ideal, she thought. Kanak Bhawan, dating back to Treta Yug, is the beautiful palace that she gifted to Sita. The beautiful idols of Goddess Sita along with Lord Ram and his three brothers at Kanak Bhawan are a delight to sore eyes.

12.15 PM: REFRESHMENTS
Ram Janmbhoomi does not open before 1 pm, so use this time to stop for refreshments outside Kanak Bhawan. You can also stop by at Kanak Sarkar Rasoi, run by the Kanak Bhawan trust. It serves garlic and onion free delicacies in set thalis. The thali consists of a Dal, Rice, two vegetables and rotis. You also get a breakfast of poori sabzi here, for just Rs.10!

A 15-minute walk takes you from Kanak Bhawan to Ram Janmbhoomi.

1 PM: RAM JANMABHOOMI
One of the major attractions in Ayodhya, the Ram Janmbhoomi temple is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, and is hence thronged by devotees.
Open all days: 7 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 6 pm

2 PM: VALMIKI RAMAYAN BHAWAN
This place is famous for the Valmiki Ramayana which has been engraved beautifully on marble here. When a devotee’s wish is fulfilled, he comes here to submit text copies filled with ‘सीता राम’ written several thousand times, at the Ram Naam Bank.

4 PM: GUPTAR GHAT
No trip to Ayodhya is complete without a visit to ghats of the sacred Saryu river. On the way back to Lucknow, do make a stopover at this sacred ghat is believed to be the spot where Lord Rama took Jal Samadhi. It is here that Lord Rama took his last dip and was never seen again in human form. You can also take a boat ride on the river Saryu, which is known to be the abode of hundreds of dolphins! And while you are here, try the pakodas and corn-on-the-cob available on the ghat.
