Pitru Paksha Shraddha 2025: Pitru paksha homage to ancestors through food and water offerings in the form of Pind Pradhan and tarpan. The duration of the Pitru paksha is 16 lunar days in the lunar month of Bhadrapada /Ashwin as per the Hindu calendar. People from the south and west of India follow this in the lunar month of Bhadrapada and people from the north follow this in the month of Ashwin. It begins with the full moon day or a day after the full moon day and ends on Mahalyaya Amavasya. Pitru paksha Shraddha has different names depending upon the region and language.

Importance of Pitru Paksha:

According to Hindu scriptures, there are three debts called Dev, Rishi, and Pitru debts. People offer food and water to fulfill their ancestors who come to the earth planet during Pitru paksha. As a tribute and tradition, people perform Pitru Karya in Pitru paksha and are followed by Devata Karyas after Pitru paksha. When we follow this order one will get good results from Devata pujas. Pitrus bestow Santana (generation), Santrupti (happiness), and Sampath (wealth). So this afterlife ritual is very important.

Significance of Pitru Paksha Shraddha in Kashi

Kashi (Varanasi) holds immense spiritual importance in Hindu traditions. It is believed that performing Shraddha and Pind Daan in Kashi grants moksha (liberation) to the departed souls. Procedure for Performing Pitru Paksha Shraddha in Kashi

2. Vishnu and Ganesha Puja

  • Worship of Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles.

3. Tarpan (Offering Water to Ancestors)

  • Water mixed with sesame seeds and barley is offered to the ancestors.

  • The names of the deceased ancestors are chanted while offering water.

4. Pind Daan (Offering Rice Balls)

  • Rice balls (Pindas) are prepared using rice, sesame seeds, honey, and milk.
